Martin Whelan (proprietor of MJW Amplification) makes valve amps for electric guitars, from the ground up, 100% by hand, overseeing every aspect of every build himself, from the circuit boards to the wooden cabinets within which the amps are housed. Martin pours his years of experience, vast knowledge and unparalleled passion into each amp that he builds and I thought it would make for a really interested project to capture this process on camera. So, I was privileged indeed when Martin agreed to let me hang around his workshop like a boutique amp paparazzo for a couple of days and document how these fantastic amps are built. I shot nearly a thousand pictures over the course of the two day shoot and when I began working on them I quickly realised that what I had captured wasn’t just a manufacturing process in action, but a true artisan at work. Below is a very small selection for your perusal.
