When The Wife used to work in Castleford we’d drive across Heath Common on our daily commute where, especially during the foggy winter months, we would see the shadowy silhouettes of the Heath Common ponies grazing in the early morning light. At the time I inexplicably became somewhat obsessed with the ponies, trying to catch a quick snap on my phone while I sat in traffic, so the idea of making a photo study of them has been circling around the magic roundabout of my mind for quite some time now.
The ponies are owned and cared for by the local traveling community who have kept them on the common for many a year now. Up close they are magnificent beasts, each with their own personalities, some inquisitive and some a little shy. Some were a little jumpy too, so it could be a little tricky gauging my approach as everything I shot was on a 35mm lens, meaning that I had to be stood right next to the ponies to get the close up shots. A quick stamp of a hoof usually was my cue to back away gently.
All in all this was a really enjoyable shoot and I hope you enjoy the results. Here is a small selection of the shots I captured. Thanks for looking.
